Voice to Paper

when my voice doesn’t carry over distance

and you are far

when I don’t have your ear

when your heart is occupied

and I am likely to overwhelm you

I will talk to the blank page

which will listen

always

when I can’t find counsel

and friends who have space

or I struggle to reach out

I will talk to the blank page

which is there for me

always

when I want to be seen

but seem to be looking for water in a desert

and my cries are swallowed by silence

I will talk to the blank page

which hears me

always

when I rather want to escape into distraction

but instead turn towards my feelings and emotions

and seek peace by talking to the blank page

it is there for me

always

when I need help to process

to create meaning and connection

freeing myself of what I am obsessing over

I will talk to the blank page

which is open to me

always

when I share what my hand is compelled to write

I feel vulnerable

I feel exposed

no longer able to hide

what’s going on for me

when I let it get out of hand

(and on paper)

I might be misunderstood

and read in ways I couldn’t possibly anticipate

though speaking from my heart with no regrets

I take risks

with the doubts, projections and other delicate things hidden in the play of my words

not fixed and set in stone but raising

and expressing questions

not seeking answers

living by my words
